Moulton College Food & Drink Innovation Centre

Designing for innovation and enterprise

A specialist centre that nurtures food technology, science, and entrepreneurial learning within a rural-agricultural college setting.

Created to support training in food science, nutrition, and agribusiness, the Food & Drink Innovation Centre at Moulton College provides high-quality, hygienic, and inspiring environments for students, educators, and industry collaborators.

LBY Architects worked closely with curriculum leaders and leading industry technical consultants to ensure the design promotes modern enterprise as well as practical learning. The building is designed to be an attractive hub for engagement with the thriving local food manufacturing industry and will be let to industry partners for testing and development of their own products.

Built for Creativity and Compliance

The building houses:

  • Commercial-grade food preparation and test kitchens

  • A sensory testing suite and product development kitchen

  • A micro-brewery

  • Flexible seminar and teaching rooms

Circulation and spatial zoning were carefully developed to support industry-standard food hygiene protocols, with clear boundaries between raw and clean areas, dry and wet zones, and front and back-of-house spaces.

The micro-brewerly helps to students to experience the whole process from ‘field-to-fork’, or in this case bottle, with ingredients sourced from the College’s fields and students learning about not only the process of making the beer, but also packaging design and marketing.

A Rural Hub for Modern Enterprise

Sited within Moulton’s agricultural campus, the centre reflects both its local context and its forward-thinking mission. Design features include:

  • Simple profiled steel-clad volumes to create a modern agricultural aesthetic

  • A bright and airy reception space with a welcoming open plan office

  • Generous windows and internal glazing for daylight and visibility

  • A photovoltaic covered roof

The overall feel is practical but professional, communicating ambition while remaining grounded in agricultural education.
