Moulton College Welfare Centre

Advancing education in animal science

Planning a purpose-built facility supporting animal science, care and veterinary education through flexible, practical learning spaces.

Designed to meet growing demand for specialist animal science training, the Animal Welfare Centre at Moulton College aims to provides a robust and adaptable learning environment that prioritises animal welfare and student experience.

The building is designed to support a curriculum spanning domestic, exotic, and farm animal care, and is designed to reflect the realities of hands-on animal welfare education and modern methods of animal display.

Designed Around the Curriculum

The internal layout is centred on clarity, hygiene, and supervision. It includes:

  • Controlled animal housing environments in a Bioprotection Zone

  • Dedicated grooming, feeding, and observation spaces

  • Flexible teaching rooms and wet labs

  • Visitor reception and student engagement zones

  • A biome to create an exciting animal display area

Staff areas are strategically located for safe monitoring of both animals and learners, ensuring an educational setting that meets strict welfare standards.

Functional and Contextual Design

The form and materials are deliberately simple and durable, echoing agricultural building typologies found elsewhere on the campus. The building is tightly integrated with new external landscaped areas, providing animal displays in a naturalistic setting and a number of covered ‘outdoor classrooms’ for teaching students.

It sits as part of a broader animal sciences cluster on campus and supports future adaptability through modular, expandable planning.
