Moulton College Student Housing
Living and learning in balance
Contemporary student accommodation that supports independence, wellbeing, and a strong sense of academic community.
As part of an ongoing campus investment, this student housing scheme for Moulton College was developed to improve residential life while enhancing the overall student experience. LBY Architects designed a series of low-rise buildings arranged in landscaped clusters, akin to an Italian hilltop town, prioritising privacy, community, and comfort.
The result is a calm and characterful living environment that feels safe, welcoming, and fully integrated into the wider campus.
Designed Around Student Life
The accommodation offers:
En-suite study bedrooms with natural daylight and good acoustic control
Shared kitchens, dining areas and lounges to encourage social interaction
Accessible and adaptable units for inclusive living
Generous circulation and storage space for practicality and comfort
The plan layout supports both independence and shared experience - a key requirement for a diverse, multi-year residential cohort. The design is optimised to work around a single entrance and stair for each building, which also increases opportunities for students to ‘meet by chance’. Each cluster of rooms has a shared kitchen and large kitchen table area with comfortable seating. A standardised spatial module ensures that shared living spaces and accessible rooms are interchangeable with standard rooms to provide futureproofing.
Rural Character, Contemporary Feel
Externally, the housing reads as a contemporary rural typology, using:
Brickwork with powder coated metal elements and composite timber and aluminium windows, for long term robustness and ease of maintenance
Simple pitched roof forms with high-level windows for natural light in corridors and cleverly designed space for services to exit, that avoids making any penetration through the roof
The massing respects neighbouring academic buildings while clearly expressing its residential use.
A robust pallette of materials for interiors including exposed brickwork and galvanised steel balustratdes, complemented by brightly painted circulation spaces
The buildings are set into a characterful landscape design, which offers further opportunities for social gathering and an imaginative planting scheme delivered and lovingly maintained by the College’s own grounds team and students.
